A chapter from a web based book on the world wide web (WWW) produced in a graduate level computer science course. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to early hypertext pioneers including Bush, Engelbart and Nelson as well as a description of how Tim Berners_Lee launched today's web from CERN.

The books is well constructed, easy to navigate and contains a large number of links to other resources.

It turns out that one of Berners_Lee's inspirations for the web was a victorian book called Enquire Within About Everything. My mom has this book. It is truly a remarkable beastie. If you ever get a chance to fondle it, give it a browse. It will make your eyebrows move. -- cdent
